We are lucky to work closely with local schools in both identifying and supporting young carers. Support to young carers can differ, depending on the age of the children and availability of staff and classrooms.
Andover secondary schools run supported drop-in groups, which are well advertised, and young carers can pop in as and when they feel the need.
In primary schools support is more structured with lunchtime sessions, where young people relax, take part in activities and have the opportunity to speak to school or a support worker from Andover Young Carers. If a young carer is assessed as needing support and attends a school where there is no formal group they may have 1 – 1 sessions with a Young Carer Support Worker for a period of time.
