Working with schools

We are lucky to work closely with local schools in both identifying and supporting young carers.

Support to young carers can differ, depending on the age of the children and availability of staff and classrooms.

Andover Secondary schools run supported drop in groups, which are well advertised, and young carers can pop in as and when they feel the need.

In Primary Schools support is more structured with lunchtime sessions, where young people relax, take part in activities and have the opportunity to speak to school or Andover Young Carer’s staff. If a young carer is assessed as needing support and attends a school where there is no formal group they may have 1 – 1 sessions with a Young Carer Support Worker for a period of time.

Andover Young Carers promotes the Carers Trust, Young Carers in Schools Programme (YCiS) and was delighted when in 2016 Knights Enham Junior School was awarded the Bronze Award.

Other schools are now taking their first steps on this programme, supported by Andover Young Carers.

Our future plans include looking at how we can extend support to local village schools.
