Celebrating Siblings!

April 10th is National Siblings Day – a global awareness day recognising brothers and sisters, especially those growing up with a disabled brother or sister.

Day-to-day life may centre around the needs and abilities of another which can be challenging. Siblings play a valuable role in the lives of their disabled brothers and sisters, sharing a unique relationship but often also taking on caring tasks. Many of the young carers at AYC help care for a disabled brother or sister.

A new report by Sibs, the charity for brothers and sisters of disabled siblings, was launched this week, looking at the school experiences of siblings of disabled children. A staggering 74% of siblings told Sibs that they received no support from school to help them with their sibling situation. (Full report here: https://www.sibs.org.uk/ifonly/)

National Siblings Day is a moment to recognise and celebrate these amazing siblings for who they are and all they do.
