Meet Volunteer Diana

My name is Diana and I am a volunteer at Andover Young Carers on Wednesday afternoons during term time. I have been in this role for ten years, since I retired from work in the NHS. I am a mother and grandmother and wanted something else useful to do when I was retired. I am very fond of young people. I heard about the work Young Carers do through the Andover Rotary club, and watching Children in Need on TV. When I heard they needed more volunteers I decided to apply. The group I help with are ages 12 to 16. I prepare and serve the meals, which have usually been partly precooked by another volunteer, then I clear and wash up afterwards, and then generally socialise with the youngsters whatever activity, or not, they are doing.

I enjoy it very much and there is always a happy and friendly atmosphere at our venue. We volunteers and young carers are always made most welcome and appreciated by the few paid staff. The youngsters who come can relax and thrive in the company of others who have difficulties at home and sometimes at school.

I would definitely recommend volunteering to anyone who has the time to do something for their community. It does give you some sense of satisfaction and can be fun.
